A Parenting ?

For some reason Cole has not been sleeping through the night. Every night, like clockwork, he goes to bed at 8:00 but then is up almost always at 1:30. He was sleeping through the night for quite a while prior to this so I am just baffled at the change. This new pattern has also crept into his naptimes. He will wake up before he is anywhere near ready and just cries and cries. We are done with teething, so that's not it. We have a check-up scheduled for him at the end of this month, so I'm planning on talking with his pediatrician about it. But until then, did anyone else's kids go through this? I'm just not sure what to do......I don't know if he's having nightmares, is afraid of something in his room (although he goes in there to play all of the time), or what else it could be. There haven't been any big changes in our lives lately, so I'm just completely in the dark about all of this and how I can help him. Suggestions and advice are much appreciated!

Hmmmm - good question. I would suggest calling his dr. this week and asking him about the situation, rather than waiting until the end of the month and guessing until then.

I think I will....he slept through the night last night, so we'll see how today goes....but if he's back to getting up again, I'll call tomorrow. Thanks Rhonda!

Honey, I just remember that you, too, had a lot of difficulty with sleep "patterns." Not so much with naps, but night time was a nightmare....for you AND for us because we didn't know what to do for you. We'd tried everything we could think of.

I'm with Rhonda........Call NOW. Don't wait until Cole's appt.

I COULD say he probably needs Grandma, but I know that's not the case......except for Grandma!!

Love you and will pray for things to change for the better. Grandmom A.

Megs,

Just a thought and it may sound silly, but is there anyone in your neighborhood who works 2nd shift and perhaps gets home around the time Cole wakes up? Might be outside noises disturbing him, although with his fan and all, seems like he wouldn't hear 'em.

Parenting............one of the biggest blessings; one of the biggest puzzlements! Love, Grandmom

Wouldn't you know that as soon as I post something, a solution occurs! Cole has slept through the night the last two nights. Both days we pushed back his naptime and he didn't sleep as long for his nap.....therefore, leading me to believe that he was moving out of his "tons of sleep" stage and is now in more of a "big boy" sleeping stage. Anyway, we'll keep on this new schedule and see how it goes!

Megan-I wanted to write this to you earlier but didn't get a chance. My advice would be to just know that this will soon pass and you will be worrying about some other change. I would not give him drinks, snack....I would just put him back in bed after you have made sure he is actually fine. They pick up patterns so easily and if you start rocking, playing, drinking...they soon like that and think it's play/fun time. I know it seems harsh and uncareing but that is the avenue I would take. Even if he is having dreams there's isn't much a Dr. can do...I don't think. My guess would be he woke up once and everyone came running, he got rocked, a drink maybe a snack and he liked it. Just my humble opinion. I didn't like getting up in the night, so my kids learned real fast that wouldn't work with me! :) ~joanne
